Frequently Asked Questions
In just a few words: Vibrant and genuine, with true color and great light.
We photograph your memories in a genuine, true to the moment style. We don’t use many trendy presets, and we love vibrant color and beautiful light. We also typically offer a variety of black and white photographs with every gallery, as we feel they make your story truly timeless.
We offer you poses and prompts during engagement sessions and the portrait sections of your wedding or elopement day. Beyond that, we tend towards lifestyle and capturing moments as they happen organically. The end result is a lovely blend of images that tell your love story.
You. Your SO. A beautiful setting.
Us. An officiant. A gorgeous, styled bouquet and altar, that we’re happy to provide, set up, and tear down.
1-12 of your closest friends and family members who are willing to witness your love, and beautiful images to share with everyone else who isn’t there.
We love elopements. We believe that at the heart of every wedding, the only thing that really matters is the two of you. Elopements strip down ceremonies to exactly that, and we’re all about it.
We offer simple photography packages, or full service packages that include most of the pieces necessary to make your elopement feel effortless. You simply show up and be truly present with your love and your vows.
We create something completely unique and beautiful for you, from start to finish.
Your engagment session should showcase who you are as a couple, and we do that with our styled engagement sessions by creating a complete vision with you — from location (mountains, beaches, waterfalls, orchid shows, you name it!), to props, wardrobe, hair and makeup, and more. Once we’ve created the shared vision, we’ll gather the best vendors and make magic happen for you. Leave the organization up to us — simply show up on your session date, and enjoy the experience!
Jen: I was gifted my first camera at about age 4, I think. It came with an adorable companion book, and had me hooked from early on (I still have the book here in the studio for reference). But photography probably began in earnest for me even sooner.
Prior to his retirement, my dad owned a print shop, so I grew up in a darkroom. Often on Saturdays, when he had to catch up on work at the shop, he’d set me up in the dark room with their process camera (which had a max film size of 20×24″) and I’d make giant film negatives of random objects. I even have a few negatives of my own tiny hands.
In high school, my dad gifted me his Canon FT 35mm, and that’s when my love of black and white film photography was born. I learned (again, and in more detail) how to enlarge and develop film, and was thrilled by the process of “unearthing” an image under red light.
During college, my love for photography continued, and although my degree is in Media Art and Animation, not long into my career as a 2d/3d artist and designer, I knew that portraits and landscapes were calling me. BlueVerve Studio began sometime in 2007, as I began to take on more freelance work, and pursue photography as a hobbiest.
In 2013, I officially transitioned from working in the gaming industry (designing artwork and environments for Big Buck Hunter HD, the arcade game, among others), to working as a portrait photographer full time. I photographed my first wedding in 2014, and have been sharing love stories ever since.
We love our couples. They’re fun people, with cool stories, and we really enjoy spending quality time with them during their planning process. So, we only take a limited number of wedding and elopement commissions per year. Typically, this comes out to about 16-20 weddings + elopements and vow renewals.
We’re not a high volume studio, by design. We love to travel, to enjoy life, to get to know incredible people, to occasionally be able to enjoy naps, AND, give you the best service around. Since it’s just Jen behind the editing of your images, we keep our commissions low, and our quality high.
Hey, great question!
Since photography sessions require us to be out on location a lot, all of our consultations, sessions, and services are by appointment only.
We do have official office hours, which can be found below. We do our best to take Sundays and Mondays off, as we value time with our family, and time spent loving life!
Studio Office Hours:
Tuesday – Friday: 10am – 6pm
Saturday: Varies per season
Sunday – Monday: Closed
Please keep in mind that we absolutely do book sessions and weddings outside of our office hours. Office hours are simply a great guideline for when you can get a hold of us, or when we’ll be editing your images.
We book sessions, consultations, and meetings by appointment only, and our availability fills up somewhat quickly, so try to book as soon as you know you’re interested.
Typically, we recommend scheduling sessions around an hour or two before sunset, if possible. That is the best light available in the day (short of sunrise, which we do ocaisionally schedule around as well).
Please keep in mind that summer sunsets occur later at night, so be prepared for a later evening shoot in the summer. Winter sunsets are early on, and for people who work 9-5, that means that weekends are often the best bet to catch that beautiful golden hour light that happens right before sunset. However, weekends book quickly, and we are available on weekday evenings too!
Remember – your session fee or a 50% retainer of your package is due upon booking in order to hold your date.
If you need to reschedule your session, please give us a call at least one week in advance or more if possible. Although we absolutely understand that life happens, our time is valuable (as is yours!), so failure to do so will result in a forfeiture of the session fee or 50% retainer. If inclement weather or illness occurs and we need to reschedule as a result, there will be no additional fee, and your session fee or 50% retainer will simply transfer to your rescheduled date.
That depends a little bit upon the season. During the winter and early spring, our turnaround is a bit quicker. Once peak wedding season hits, the turnaround can be delayed slightly. Typically, you can expect your images 2 weeks after your engagement or portrait session, and 4-6 weeks after your wedding.
Occasionally, during our busy months, those times are extended by about a week, but we’ll keep you in the loop, so you know what to expect.
We maintain full copyright on all images we take. This is true anytime an image is taken — the photographer has copyright. And we keep it, because the images are our creative work.
However, like most professional photographers, we grant you a print release with your images, which means you can print them just about anywhere for anything.
The caveat is that if you’re going to enter them into a competition, or for print, or make any money off of them, you’ll need our written permission first. Which, if it comes up, don’t be afraid to ask! 🙂 Again, we’re here to help! If you have a special circumstance and need a limited license, we can work it out.
Why do we do things this way? Our images make up our portfolio. We use them here, on the website. We promote our business with them. We enter them into print competitions and submit them to magazines. They are our art, and our livelihood. Of course, we always check in with you first, to ensure you’re comfortable with the use of your images for magazine submission, if that’s something we’re considering.
We have full service print options, including a variety of photo finishes (lustre, matte, and a super cool metallic finish that we love for black and white), as well as wall art. We offer canvas options, metal prints, wood prints, and more.
Plus, our albums are lovely. They come in a variety of cover styles, and have the lush, thick, high quality page weight you’d expect from an heirloom piece. >>> Which is exactly what they are!
No, and not to tell you your business, but you wouldn’t want that.
We curate galleries based off of the best images we take. We weed out the blinks (yes, they happen), duplicates, and other non-gems so you don’t need to waste your time looking through images that should be on the cutting room floor.
We offer online galleries for ease and convenience, and you can order prints and products directly from them.
We also offer in-person ordering sessions. These are for art lovers. For those who appreicate photography and know from the start which walls they want to fill. They’re for our couples and families that have a vision, and want our help bringing it to life!
Oooof. We’ve been there. And we power through. (Day Quil and Echinnacea in the camera bag, and Emergen-C in the water bottle!) You’ve hired us to capture your wedding day, so we show up and give you our best, no matter what.
However, in the unlikely event that an act of god, emergency, or complete inability to perform comes up, we will replace one or both of us with an equally skilled, photographer with a similar photographic style, at no cost to you.
We ask that you do. It’s not required within our contract, however, we sincerely appreciate it.
We’re humans, and most humans, tend to run best with food, it turns out.
We currently do not have a studio, however, there are a variety of AirBnBs and Venues we work with for indoor photography locations. In the warmer months, we are outside on location all the time, can recommend many excellent spots, and are always open to new locations we’ve yet to experience.
We offer retouching, in fact, basic retouching is included in all of my portrait and headshot sessions. My policy is to help you look your best – while maintaining the truth of who you are. If any retouching happens, it will be purely on blemishes (pimples!) and things that are not permanent.
If you are looking for more extensive retouching, such as wrinkle removal or sculpting, that can be requested starting at $25 an image, depending on the complexity of the edit you are requesting.
Besides having spent 7 years collectively working as a professional artist in the casino and arcade game industries, I’ve had an active career as a freelance artist – which translates to a love of creativity in my photography, solid knowledge of design, and a lot of technical skills in image processing, so rest assured, when it comes to editing, your images are in great hands.
